The importance of high school Part 1

High school was originally conceived as a place to warehouse teenagers until they turned 18 and then they were cast out into the world never to be thought of again unless they committed some great feat or some infamous crime. That is, once child labor laws abolished for all intents and purposes, legal child labor that went from can't see to can see to can't see. Fear not, illegal child labor is alive and well and profitable for those who traffic in it. High schools did not really take off until the 20th century and then not until the Depression of the 1930s.

It will please all to know that it is still a warehouse where teenagers are kept for about 6.5 hours a day, 5 days a week for four years (in theory, some manage to extend their stay a few years). The illusion that it is a place for learning and socialization is largely a myth used to keep it going. Adults buy into this myth year after year.
